"Combust-gum" was a stop-motion project where I fabricated my own fake gum with its own commercial. We did our best to show off the gum's potential to be fruit forward and full of explosive flavor as it's namesake implies.
The gum is a reused asset from my one of my earlier projects titled "Movie Theme Object Study" this time as the subject rather than a background element.
I was responsible for photographing and animating an assortment of fresh fruit in camera and composited the fruit in AfterEffects. After working in camera with each fruit individually with my green and blue screens I transferred the footage to be compiled in program and touch up some of the motion. I was responsible for making every aspect of this project besides the music. I cut the song into a small section that I think fit the theme of a commercial. The song is "Iko Iko" by The Dixie Cups.
I worked alongside Jacob Pham who helped with animation and compositing.
This is the gum package from my "Movie Theme Object Study" project that I based this project around. I changed the idea from a secret agent gadget disguised as gum to a publicly consumed gum with an explosive based theme.
The concept was easy in simple. We take the real fruits that flavor the products and as some explosions! I took all of my fruits and adapted the original design to them for each package.
The original concepts for some of our fruits needed some work after we saw the space we were working with. A few of the fruits didn't make sense in space we were confined to, but we kept a lot of the aesthetics from our concept art to make sure the design translated seamlessly from the packaging to the fruit animations. After getting all of our fruits and set up in order we printed out my designs and taped them over our gum packages.
