"Sugar Dollars" (2017)
The Sugar Dollars series was a sequence focused on both the absolute and utter domination meaningless paper has on civilized society.
As paper money provides nothing but imaginary value that we project on to it, the sugar dollars mock its existence by having physical value. Each bank note is made entirely out of sugar carved from large blocks of refined sugar designated by the notation carved into each bill (White Brown and Confectioners).
The images depicted on each bill are representative of the people who work while others benefit by living off the backs of workers. The sugar bills paid homage to the people who make the sugar and their ancestors so we do not forget or lose sight of the importance of these bills. The sugar bills provided sustenance if consumed, shelter if stacked, or warmth if burned.
The bills were all marked with the alchemical symbol for sugar to denote each bill’s composition. Each bill was also marked with a symbol of each planet in the solar system as the sugar dollars worship the universe paganly in lieu of the Christian God (Greco-Roman statues also denote this). Lastly, separate sections of a speech praising a matriarchal society of gatherers is printed on each bill. Once all bills are assembled the full speech can be read
Pastillage is another word for sugar sculpture.
(Unfortunately, physical copies of these bills are no longer in production)
"Blind World" (2016 - 2018)
